HarperCollins Publishers is one of the largest consumer book publisher in the world, with its operations in 17 countries. With a rich history of 200 years and more than 120 branded imprints around the world, HarperCollins publishes approximately 10,000 new books every year in 16 languages, and also has a print and digital catalogue of more than 200,000 titles.

THE Objective

Revamp the existing website with the following objectives:

  • Improve overall site architecture and navigation to enable easier browsing and improved accessibility.
  • Improve overall aesthetic and user experience to make the site more engaging.
  • Provide customers with an easy, efficient way of searching through their existing extensive categories of books and authors.
  • Improve load time performance and on-page content strategy to boost search rankings.

THE APPROACH

The team at Iffort had a few sessions with HarperCollins India team to understand the issues they were facing with the website. The UI/ UX team at Iffort did an in- depth analysis of the website which pointed out all the drawbacks. Some of the features and elements which needed immediate attention were the overall layout of all pages, fonts/typography, page loading speed. To overcome all these, it was recommended that the website needed a complete redesign and development.

Iffort worked on HCI’s existing palette of striking shades of blue and red and gave much more weight to both imagery and white space. We at Iffort made sure a strong user experience was driving creative decisions. We stuck closely to their existing information architecture, but created significantly clearer paths to the content. The redesign included segregated sections with reduced copy, and more breathing room to make paths to content clearer.

The team at Iffort used technologies such as WordPress and PHP to develop amazing features on the website. Author detail and listing which has the latest news about authors, their books and next in series. Book category and Genre pages, to discover, say, crime, romance or non-fiction books.

The most important feature of the website is ‘Book Finder’. Using this feature one can find books categorized under various genres such as autobiography, history, hopeless romantics, YA fanatics and many more. This particular feature has proven to be a lifesaver for all the readers where you can browse and choose what & whom to read.

THE RESULT

The new Harper Collins India website now has a significantly better user experience. The new information architecture makes discovering content/books and author details easier through stronger organization. In particular, the new Book Finder houses all books under one roof categorised by different genres. SEO also got a big boost from the improved site speed, which is essential to support the digital strategy efforts.
